About

CGI-Clinics: Data-driven cancer genome interpretation for personalised cancer treatment

CGI-Clinics is a community-driven project that aims to improve precision medicine in oncology by optimising genomic data interpretation (after sequencing and before advising on compatible targeted therapies).

Interpretation is a bottleneck for the full deployment and broad accessibility of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) in cancer management. The project tackles the 3 main hurdles in the interpretation of cancer mutations: it is not systematic, it deals with a majority of variants of unknown significance and it fails to empower patients.

THE PROJECT AT A GLANCE

PRECISION CANCER MEDICINE

PROBLEMS

SOLUTIONS

Non-systematic
interpretation

  • Dependent on onsite experts
  • Different in each hospital
  • Relevant information scattered in different databases
  • Time consuming
  • Suboptimal interpretation for the patient

Systematic interpretation
with CGI-Clinics

  • One stop shop tool for systematic interpretation
  • Versatile and flexible tool fed by experts
  • Tool developed with clinicians to meet their needs
  • European Guidelines for cancer genome interpretation
  • Tool coupled with virtual tumor boards to get feedback from experts

Variants of unknown
significance

  • Most mutations in tumors are of unknown significance
  • Tumor genome features underused
  • Large amount of patients tumor’s data not exploited

Automatic
learning

  • Novel algorithms to learn systematically the significance of cancer variants and tumor genomic features directly from patients data
  • Solution to gather and share patients data by the use of CGI-clinics to fed the Automatic Learning Platform
  • Continuos learning from more data
  • New knowledge fed directly into CGI-clinics for clinical interpretation

Patients
unengaged

  • Patients are passive actors in the cancer management
  • Genomic information is complex to understand
  • Unintelligible information increases patients’ psychological burden
  • Patients are interested in participating in research but do not know how

Empower
patients (eduCGI)

  •  eduCGI converts patients in active actors in cancer management
  • Report designed for the patient to understand their tumor
  • Patient report grounded on scientific evidences
  • Patients learn about the impact of sharing their data for research
  • eduCGI provides a solution to give consent to share their own data
